HEY KIDS! Make a movie and win!

Children of McConnell! It's time to make your most viral video yet!

Are you a military child? Are you proud of your military family and the sacrifices they make for our country? We want to hear from you!

Sponsored by Mel Hambelton Ford, McConnell AFB Youth Programs is excited to announce our new contest for April, celebrating Month of the Military Child. This year, we're shaking things up! Instead of a written essay, we're inviting all military kids to submit a short video about what it means to you to be a military child. Did we mention you could win prizes? Top two videos in each age category will win gift cards.

Between April 1 and April 30, we want to hear about your experiences as a military child, and what matters to you. It could be your parents, your siblings, the schools you've attended, places you've lived, or anything else that you think makes your life unique. Show us what it means to be a military child, and the unique experiences, challenges, and triumphs that come with it. The video can be a verbal essay, an interview, a short movie, a presentation or any other creative way you think it will represent the topic. Be yourself and use your imagination!

The video should be at least 3 minutes, but not exceed 10 minutes and should be filmed in one of the following formats (MOV, MP4, AVI, WMV). Make sure to film in a quiet location and ask for help from a parent, family member or friend. The final video must not exceed 2GB. Videos must be appropriate for all ages, and submissions in other languages are welcome with translations requested and subtitles added post-production. Uploading is easy:

  1. Film & edit your video
  2. Go to wetransfer.com and click "Send a File" to get started
  3. In your message, be sure to tell us your name and age
  4. Type in This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. when it asks who you're sending it to
  5. Hit Transfer
  6. That's all!

Remember to include your name and age in the video, and make sure to get your parent's permission if you are under 18. Additionally, signed copies of the Video Contest Release Form for all individuals who appear in the video will be required during the submission process. We can sort all these boring details out with you, but the important thing is to have fun!

A panel of judges will review the videos and select winners in two age groups (9-12 & 13-18) based on the following criteria:

  • Thoughtful: Does the response show a deep understanding and reflection on being a military child?
  • Authenticity: Does the video capture the honest, personal experience of what it's like to be a military child?
  • Creativity: Does the video show that the participant put thought and care into the production of the video?
  • Emotion: Does the video reflect the range of emotions that come with being a military child?
  • Relevance: Is the video relevant to today's youth, and something that other kids can relate to?
  • Storytelling: The way the individual is capable of telling a story from the perspective of a military child, the plot, dialogue, and structure.
  • Photography/videography: the way the video is shot, lighting, angles, and editing.

So grab your phone and start filming! We can't wait to see what you come up with. Remember to submit your video by 11:59 pm on April 30th and have fun!
